FINE ART PRACTICE
Margins, edges and perimeters preserve the fragile extremities of a fluid’s trace on a surface. When ‘surface’ is considered as a volume or substrate, gravity extends the fluid trace three-dimensionally; a ‘margin’ can become an object.
In this series of objects, a liquid penetrates a porous substrate and coalesces. The substrate, which is later dissolved away, operates as a temporary mould. Even slight changes to the viscosity of the liquid result in quite different outcomes.

In this series of paintings, the utilitarian gesture of undercoating, in this case with a transparent 'binder', is detected at a crucial moment in its drying process. Through brushings of dry pigment, like dusting for fingerprints or hidden evidence, inconsistencies and randomness within an apparently pure surface are revealed.

This series of work explores the way a solvent erodes and combines with a substrate before coalescing. The remaining substrate, which is later dissolved away, operates as transient, transmutable mould. The resulting objects are fine skeletal networks that play with scale and origin, flipping between organic and synthetic.

My fascination with paint began with its inherent expressive potential, its metamorphosis from physical matter into allusion to something more than itself.

These drawings are pictorial constructions that expand sensibilities manifested in the objects.
A key concern with the objects, photos and paintings is that of the object/space and figure/ground relationship. This relationship becomes a matter of content too; it speaks of the integrity of separate objects and how they hold their own in space, be it real or imagined.

In these works I reclaim gestural use of paint, and combine two key concerns present in my process based work; the vulnerability of separate objects as they hold their own in space, real or imagined, and the unstable nature of perceptual space itself. Inheriting, in terms of gesture, a somewhat perfunctory feel from the process driven work, these works 'figure' and 'ground' are teased away from their respective functions - figures dissolve, flatten, and slip behind their grounds; stretched thinly they become grounds themselves. Grounds disintegrate, float free as new figures, or re-establish themselves within figures. The two roles become transmutable; the relationship becomes precarious.

In some ways the mind works similarly when sketching as it does while dreaming; it links threads and concepts from everyday interactions into unexpected and often implausible scenarios.
